"Night Responses" for ch 4 & 5

Respond the following questions regarding "Night" chapters 4 and 5 by Thursday, October 6th.

1. What events lead to the two hangings Wiesel describes in chapter four? How does Wiesel feel about his evening meal after each hanging? What do his reactions suggest about how he is
changing?

2. In the camps, Wiesel must struggle to stay alive and to remain human. In your opinion,
how well does he succeed with his struggles?

3. There are several discussions about resistance by the prisoners. Why do you think there
was no large scale effort to resist?

4. In finishing the interview with Oprah, Wiesel says he doesn't carry hatred with him towards to the Nazis, yet we see him mention the word "hate" in "Night". How and why do think that he has moved away from hatred?

13 comments:

  1. 1. The first hanging was with the little servent of the Dutchman. He was a victim, a "sad-eyedangel." He struggled for about half an hour before he was chocked to death with the other two adults. Wiesel felt that the evening soup tasted of corpses. He is becoming so monotone. If he sees something, he doesn't react a much as he used to at first.
    2. Elie succedess so well with his struggles. He goes through so much, before he completely starts to shut down. He is a very strong, brave person.
    3. ...
    4. He was filled with hatred during the time. I think when he thinks about it (i'm sure that he always does) he doesn't feel that hate anymore. It faded away throughout all these years. He has realized that he wasn't the only victim, that he wasn't the only one that felt/feels the way he did/does. He was a diffrent P.O.V of this whole thing.

  2. 1. The un-named man was hung because he got accused of stealing. Oberkapo's Pipel was hung because Oberkapo was suspected of sabotage and the Gestapo found an important stock of arms on a trail to the Dutch Oberkapo. He was tortured than the SS sentenced him to death. For the first hanging Wiesel described his soup as never better. The hanging of Oberkapo's Pipel he described his soup had tasted of corspes. Wiesel's experience with the hangings made him more bitter as a person.

    2. Wiesel succeeded with his struggles because he had more focus on staying alive for his father than he had to feel pitty for himself. He never came to the conclusion that his mother and sister were immediately killed at Auschwitz because he didn't want to ware himself down.

    3. There wasn't a large effort to resist because the prisoners knew that if they were to resist, they would get beat until they were covered in blood as a result.

    4. Wiesel moved away from his hatred because he only feels hatred when he is experiencing helplessness. Now, he can help by teaching about it and making sure people don't forget what happened so it doesn't happen again. Since he can do something to help it he currently doesn't feel any hatred.

  3. 1. The un-named man was hung because he got accused of stealing. Oberkapo's Pipel was hung because he was suspected of sabotage and the they found a stock of arms. they tortured him then hung him. For the first one Wiesel described his soup as better than usual. When Oberkapo's Pipel was hung he described his soup as tasting of of corspes. After the hanging he lost his faith in god.

    2.
He is doing very well at staying alive in such a harsh enviorment. But i think that he is loosing some of himself as he is in the camps. When he doesnt react to his dad being beat this shows how he is changing.

    3. No one resisted majorly because of fear.

    4. I think he doesnt hate because he sees where hate leads. The nazi's hated them and they hate the nazi's. In a way that makes them similar. I think ellie sees where hate leads and so he doesnt.

    1) the first hanging was of a little dutch boy who weisel described as a "sad eyed angel", he stuggled for at least a half hour before he died. the other two hangings occured de of adults and the soup Elie had he said that it tasted of corpses.Elis is becoming so de sensitized that he sees something and doesn't care.
2)Elie goes through his hard times very well. when something bad happens he stays out of the way or deals with it.
    3) No one resisted really because of fear engulfing them.
    4) I believe that hatred can consume you and make you evil, Weisel doesn't want to be evil so he now lets it go.

  6. 1. the first hanging was of two men and the other was one of a sad angel faced boy that everyone was sad about when he died. the boy was still alive after the chair was dropped.
2.when Ellie has a problem he just bites his lips and keeps his mouth shut.
3.no prisoner did anything because they did not want to get killed.
4.because hatred can turn you in to someone your not. and. Ellie does not carry hate because if he does he is no better then the Nazis.

  8. 1. The unnamed man was hung because he got accused of stealing. Oberkapo's Pipel was hung because Oberkapo was suspected of sabotage and the Gestapo found an important stock of arms on a trail to the Dutch Oberkapo. He was tortured and then the SS sentenced him to death. For the first hanging Wiesel described that his soupwas never better. The hanging of Oberkapo's Pipel said his soup tasted of corspes. he changed and became more unfaithful

2. Wiesel succeeded with his struggles because he focused on staying alive for his father than he had to feel pity for himself. he keeps on moving forward and trying to survive

3. There wasn't a large effort to resist because the prisoners knew that if they were to resist, they would get shot on the spot or get beaten bloody like elie did

4. Wiesel moved away from his hatred because he only feels hatred when he is experiencing helplessness. he also wants perople to remember what happened

  9. 1. The unnamed man who was hung was accused for stealing. The second was the Oberkapo's Pipel because he was accused for sabotaging and they found several firearms. That night he said the soup had tasted of corpses. Elie is losing even more faith with God because he doesn't understand why God is letting all this pain and suffering happen.
    2. For being in such horrible places and conditions he is doing very well. Elie finds ways to feed both his father and him. He also finds ways to keep him and his father safe for a longer period of time so they won't be separated.
    3. Resistance was basically a death sentence. If you didn't want to cooperate they would just kill you. They don't have time to waste on people who will just resist.
4.He has moved away from hatred maybe because he realizes hate gets you nowhere. Elie also only felt hatred when he was helpless because there was so much he wished he could do but he couldn't. The Nazi's hated the Jews, and look where that got them. Elie didn't want to take the same road to hatred that they did.

  10. 1. The first person who was hung and also unnamed person was hung for stealing, the other guy is hung for trying to sabotage, sabotaging. They also found some firearms on him. His soup was best ever, it tasted of corpses though. By this point Elie has lost almost all his faith in god.

    2. I think Elie is definately succeeding very well because his conditions are horrible and he has turned into a person that will fight and doing anything to keep him and his father alive.

    3. If you resisted you could kiss your life good bye! The SS had power to kill the jews whenever so they didnt waste time with jews that didn't cooperate.

    4. I think as he has grown older he has learned hatred does nothing. whats done is done, can't change the past. He just wants to show people and make sure it never happens again.

  11. 1. The first hanging was of two men and Elie did not really react to this one.The second hanging of a child described as a sad eyed angel made him think the soup tasted like corpse that night.
    2. In my opinion Elie is basically not a human being after all the death he has seen and the hardship he has endured. His only thought it seems is to not die and in this he does succeed.
    3. There was no large scale revolt by the prisoners because the SS had machine guns and the prisoners were lucky if they had a knife. This being the case they would have been slaughtered.
    4. I think since getting out alive from the concentration camps Elie has realized that hate will not get him anywhere and has started just to focus on not letting it happen again.
